American and European Brands Condemn Military Coup and Violence in Myanmar

March 2, 2021 | WASHINGTON, D.C.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association joined a multi-stakeholder initiative including organizations in the United States and Europe to condemn the military coup and growing violence in Myanmar (Burma).

In a statement released today, the groups called for the immediate restoration of democracy in Myanmar and the immediate release of all those detained/arrested by the military. The statement makes clear that the military coup puts the economic progress Myanmar has experienced since 2011 at risk, and calls for protection of workers during this situation.

In addition to AAFA, the statement was signed by amfori, ETI Sweden, Ethical Trading Initiative, Ethical Trade Norway, Fair Labor Association, Fair Wear Foundation, Initiative for Compliance and Sustainability, and Social Accountability International.
