Unboxing Fake Fashion Unleashing Real Dangers

Through this second study of counterfeit products, AAFA found that consumers are failing to receive authentic goods while also being exposed to a significant risk of serious harm from chemical exposure. With products tested containing hazardous chemicals, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—also known as “forever chemicals” — heavy metals, and phthalates, American consumers are unknowingly bringing dangerous counterfeit products into their homes. This second study completed in 2026, finds that over forty percent of tested products fail for hazardous chemicals. AAFA members participated in this latest testing program by sending in items between August and December 2025 including counterfeit accessories, footwear, and apparel obtained through test purchases or seizures.

A comprehensive methodology, in coordination with Intertek, is outlined in Appendix 2.
